For every American who dreams of pension plans, benefits, and a steady rise through the ranks, there is another who wants nothing more than to hang out a shingle and become his or her own boss.  They want to open restaurants, and shops; they want to sell steaks or ATV's, books or blouses.  Some of these lone-wolf types are motivated by a desire to surround themselves with something they love ( clocks or yarn or cheeses), others are motivated by a pure entrepreneurial urge, and some are driven craftsmen, artisans.  Ideally, the three things blur.
